Reich works to build integrated understanding of the effects of global environmental change on terrestrial ecosystems, and of the feedbacks from those effects back on to the carbon cycle and thus climate. This research involves a variety of tools and approaches, a diverse set of ecosystems, and a range of scales. This includes studying the effects on ecosystems of rising CO2 and associated climate change, biodiversity loss, and wildfire. To do so he has led or co-led long-term global change ecosystem experiments; developed data sets useful for scaling processes and mechanisms to ecosystem, continental scales and global scales; and worked to develop global land surface models that more effectively make use of this information. In much of this work, he has focused on integrating ecophysiology, community ecology and ecosystem structure and function.
