Juan Ramírez-Lerma

Scientific Research, Information Manager and Lab Technician, University of Minnesota, USA

Juan was trained as a biologist in Mexico. As an undergraduate, he explored molecular evolution and ecology of conifers, particularly in the subfamily Abietoideae (firs and related genus). He subsequently worked in applied ecology, obtaining a masters degree in environmental sciences and working for a conservation NGO in Mexican southern tropical forest, where he coordinated a monitoring program of large mammals in the mid basin of the Lacantún river, and helped in the design of community-based initiatives for biodiversity management. Juan also participated as an associate researcher for the Centre for Global Change and Sustainability, a Mexican federally-funded research facility. From 2018 to 2022 he worked as a technical and scientific advisor for the National Commision for Natural Protected Areas (CoNANP) and within the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

His current interests are related to how technologies such as spectral imaging can be applied to measuring and assessing biodiversity and translating state of the art science into advising for cooperation initiatives for conservation and other management projects. He is also interested in developing management skills to boost the performance of research groups.

Juan is hiking enthusiast, who enjoys camping and an amateur musician who has played multiple woodwind instruments for over 20 years.
